This person is a member of the Teaching & Learning Technologies (TLT) unit within KUMC Information Technology Services (KITS) and provides educational technology support.The Instructional Designer works closely with Senior Instructional Designers and the Associate Director to Teaching and Learning Technologies.
The Instructional Designer manages course design and development processes, evaluates course design, troubleshoots issues, and assists faculty in applying best practices in teaching and learning. The Instructional Designer consults regularly with faculty and utilizes instructional design techniques to help design and develop courses that meet the objectives of the curriculum. The Instructional Designer works closely with Senior Instructional Designers and the Assistant Director of Online Learning. This person provides regular updates to promote collaboration and trust.Job Description:
Job Duties:
- Provide leadership for the successful integration of teaching and learning technologies into the school's curriculum.
- Align TLT priorities, activities, and initiatives with the school's goals, strategies, and needs.
- Provide faculty with course design support in creating effective and engaging learning environments informed by desired learning outcomes. Consult with faculty and other stakeholders to identify course goals and applicable evidence-based instructional strategies.
- Collaborate with TLT staff as well as with academic and technical support staff in other university departments; work closely with school support staff to coordinate technology support efforts.
- Develop, manage, and evaluate daily operational processes necessary for the school's educational technology needs.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Online Learning and Senior Instructional Designers to develop and implement successful instructional design processes.
- Provide training to faculty through workshops, webinars, video tutorials, etc. covering topics related to online learning, course design, and the effective use of technology in instruction.
- Assist in providing day-to-day support and troubleshooting for the various teaching and learning technologies used by the university.
- Remain current on education and technology news, developments, and tools; develop campus awareness of important trends; and effectively integrate innovations into the school's teaching and learning practices.
- Engage in professional and scholarly activities (i.e., professional association membership, conference presentations, journal publications, research studies, grant writing, etc.)

Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in educational technology, education, instructional design, curriculum and instruction, or related field. A combination of education and relevant work experience may be substituted for degree on a year for year basis.
Work Experience:
- Experience coordinating complex projects and meeting deadlines,
- Experience developing accessible online content using a variety of development tools (i.e., Microsoft Office, HTML, Adobe Creative Cloud, Camtasia, Raptivity, Panopto, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications
Education: Master's degree in educational technology, education, instructional design, curriculum and instruction, or related field.
Work Experience:
- One or more years of experience as an instructional designer including work that demonstrates the application of instructional design principles and learning theory.
- One or more semesters of higher education teaching experience.
- Experience working with faculty in a health education or higher education setting to design, evaluate, and deliver quality instruction using evidence-based rubics and standards.
- Two years of experience directly supporting content in an online learning management system (i.e., Blackboard, Canvas, D2L, Moodle, etc.)
- One year of experience training others in the effective use of technology.
- Active participation in professional associations and organizations in the field of educational technology (e.g., membership, conferences, presentations, publications, grants, etc.)

Compensation Statement:
The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
