Summary: Repairs, maintains overhauls diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions and differentials, industrial trucks, light duty trucks, tank trucks, tractors, trailers, and other automotive vehicles by performing the following duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Receive job orders; discuss with supervisor, vehicle operator or other Company personnel.
  • Ascertain problems and plans work procedure. Visually inspect vehicle for damage, malfunction or service needs. Test drive vehicle, make written records of observations and estimates.
  • Repair, rebuild, overhaul, service or replace such components, parts and assemblies as starters, pumps, etc. of gasoline or diesel engines.
  • Repair or replace exhaust systems, including mufflers, exhaust pipes etc.
  • Remove, repair or service transmissions, differentials, etc. requiring ability to raise vehicle with hoist or jack to gain access to units on underside of vehicle.
  • Solder and repair leaks in or replace radiators and cooling system hoses. Service, replace and repair fuel oil hoses, assemblies, and examine them for leaks, wear or other problems.
  • Trouble shoot and repair fuel injection system problems; to include pumps, injectors, and electronic controls. Replace defective parts, assemble and calibrate components, assemble and test nozzle assemblies.
  • Rewire, install, calibrate and time ignition system, lights, and instrument panel. Complete related repairs on alternators, starters, batteries and voltage regulators.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on light and heavy-duty vehicles and cars in accordance with HOP's P.M. program.
  • Respond to road service calls - receive verbal description of vehicle breakdown, analyze problem and determine best available means to repair unit or get driver back in service.
  • Remove, repair, and replace truck tires weighing up to 125 pounds, with approved lifting assists. Reline and adjust brakes, repair or replace shock absorbers, align front end.
  • Mend damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts.
  • Replace and adjust headlights, and install and repair accessories such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and windshield wipers.
  • Be familiar with federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FCMCSR) and Hazardous Materials Safety Regulations (HMSR). Perform repairs and maintenance in compliance with all applicable D.O.T. requirements and prepare D.O.T. paperwork.
  • Prepare written report or record of work performed, parts used or repaired, time required, and problems remaining to be solved.
  • Comply with HOP spill and leak policies, including the Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures Plan (SPCC Plan). Take emergency action in the event of an accident, spill, leakage or fire. Use proper exhaust ventilation procedures when running engines inside garage facility. Utilize all applicable safety guards, equipment, and devices, including but not limited to hard-hats, goggles, safety shoes, ear protection, respirators, gloves, etc.

Travel:

Required to travel between facilities in a company vehicle and perform inspections and minor repairs as demands dictate.

Education and/or Experience:

Two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively with other employees of the company.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent, area, circumference and volume as well as simple measurements.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Valid Commercial Driving License or ability to take test to upgrade current license to valid Commercial Driving License.
  • Valid Brake Inspectors Certification or equivalent.
  • Ability and knowledge to pass test for Hazardous Material handling, tank endorsement and general knowledge.
  • Safe driving record

Tools:

Applicant must have their own basic tools and tool chest or box.
