Fire Chief

The Town of Canaan is seeking an experienced, dedicated, and visionary leader to serve as our next Fire Chief. The successful candidate will oversee all fire/EMS department operations, lead a team of firefighter/EMS providers and support staff, and ensure the highest standards of safety and emergency response for our community.

Approximately 70% of emergency calls in Canaan are for Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for either 911 or Interfacility transfers. The ideal candidate will be a licensed provider of emergency medical services at the Advanced level or higher and bring substantial experience managing fire-based EMS operations. This includes a proven track record in staff scheduling and addressing budgetary considerations specific to EMS and fire services.

Responsibilities include managing department budgets, coordinating training and development, implementing fire prevention programs, acting as the town Health Officer and Fire Inspector and collaborating with local agencies. Candidates must have proven leadership skills, extensive knowledge of fire and EMS service operations, and a commitment to community engagement.

Requirements: Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in fire service and EMS, including supervisory roles; current EMS Advanced provider license; management experience with staffing schedules and budgets; relevant certifications; and a valid driver’s license. A bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Emergency Medical Services, or a related field is preferred.
