Research Assistant Level III (post-doctoral)

This role supports NOAA scientists in developing scholarly manuscripts by compiling literature, maintaining bibliographic databases, and co-authoring research documents for the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC)
Join @Orchard in advancing high-impact scientific publications for NOAA Fisheries by supporting the Northeast Fisheries Science Center’s (NEFSC) Senior Scientist. This role contributes directly to national and international research initiatives by assisting with the development, organization, and drafting of peer-reviewed manuscripts and technical documents.
As the Level III Research Assistant, you’ll manage bibliographic databases, synthesize complex literature across marine and ecosystem science, and collaborate on manuscript outlines and writing. From capturing references and inserting citations to helping shape the narrative of key scientific documents, your contributions will support critical science communication and knowledge advancement.

Key Responsibilities

Searching and capturing salient literature on topics provided by the Government.

Access in various scientific search databases (e.g., Web of Science, beyond generic web-based search engines like Google)

Placing literature into a bibliographic database (e.g., Zotero, EndNote, etc.)

Maintaining a bibliographic database

Providing updates to the bibliographic database for the Senior Scientist

Searching the bibliographic database
-
Revising outlines collaboratively as provided by the Senior Scientist
-
Developing manuscripts based on revised outlines provided by the Senior Scientist
-
Collaborating with the Senior Scientist to write and co-edit the text of key manuscripts

Inserting references into select manuscripts provided by the Senior Scientist

Ensuring logical considerations are maintained on the identified topics

Perusing manuscripts provided by the Senior Scientist to ensure adequate referencing of topical statements.

Developing manuscripts, book chapters, and reports initiated by the incumbent in consultation with the Senior Scientist.

Leading and developing international and national workshops.

Leading and developing theme sessions and other fora at various international and national scientific meetings, conferences, and symposia.

Preparing and finalizing submission materials for an array of manuscript products.

Assisting or leading in the reconciliation process for manuscripts that have been submitted and reviewed by publishers.
Required Experience and Qualifications:

A PhD is required, with demonstrated experience in the publication process and having published manuscripts in the peer-reviewed literature.
