About On the Road to Wellness
On the Road to Wellness is a non-clinical, peer-led mental health organization that has served adults in Manchester and Derry, New Hampshire, since 1988. Our work is rooted in the belief that healing, recovery, and wellness are strengthened through connection, choice, dignity, hope, and meaningful community.
We provide free peer support services to adults ages 18 and older who are experiencing, have experienced, or are at risk of experiencing mental health challenges. No insurance or identification is required to access our services.
Through our two walk-in centers in Manchester and Derry, NH, participants can connect with support through:
- One-on-one peer support
- Peer-led groups
- Holistic wellness services
- Transportation assistance
- Community activities and outings
- Connection to community resources and supports
About Step-Up Step-Down
Our Step-Up Step-Down (SUSD) Program is a voluntary, peer-run residential program located in Manchester and operated by On the Road to Wellness. The program provides short-term, 24-hour peer support in a peaceful, home-like environment for adults who may benefit from additional support while strengthening stability, wellness, independence, and connection to community.
As a member of the SUSD team, you will have the opportunity to use the principles of peer support—and your own lived experience when appropriate—to help create an environment where residents feel respected, heard, supported, and empowered in their own recovery.

Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- A strong commitment to personal recovery, self-care, and wellness
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Reliability, accountability, and a strong work ethic
- The ability to consistently report to scheduled shifts on time and prepared to work
- A willingness to be open, honest, and thoughtful about how lived experience can be used appropriately to support others
- Respect for individual choice, dignity, boundaries, and different pathways to recovery
- A willingness to complete training to become a Certified New Hampshire Peer Support Specialist within one year of hire
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a peer-led team
Employment Requirements
Candidates must be able to:
- Pass a BEAS Registry screening
- Pass a New Hampshire Department of Safety background screening
- Maintain a valid driver’s license and reasonably clean driving record for residential duties
Previous justice involvement is not automatically disqualifying. Our staff are informed by a wide range of lived experiences, and we recognize the insight, compassion, and perspective those experiences can bring to peer support work.

What to Expect After Applying
Applicants can generally expect to be contacted within 2–3 business days of applying. Our hiring process begins with a preliminary phone screening, followed by an in-person interview for selected candidates.
Once selected and all required pre-employment screenings are completed, new employees are typically able to begin working within approximately two weeks.
