FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly)
Location: Springfield, MA
Employment Type: Grant Funded | Temporary Part-Time

Details: $18 per hour | 8:00 am to 2:00 pm from August 11 through September 25 | 200 hours max

Position Summary

The Temporary WIOA Construction Assistant provides short-term support to the Construction Training Program by preparing the classroom and shop for the upcoming training cycle. Reporting to the Construction Trainer, this position assists with organizing equipment and materials, completing minor facility improvements, maintaining tools, and preparing instructional resources to ensure a safe, organized, and effective learning environment for participants.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program & Classroom Preparation

  • Assist in preparing the construction classroom and shop for upcoming training sessions.
  • Organize, inventory, clean, and maintain tools, equipment, and instructional materials.
  • Prepare participant binders, training packets, classroom supplies, and instructional resources.
  • Organize storage areas and training materials to support efficient program operations.

Shop Maintenance & Improvements

  • Complete minor building repairs, painting, and maintenance projects within the construction training area.
  • Assist with constructing, repairing, or improving training stations, storage areas, and instructional demonstrations.
  • Ensure work areas are clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards.
  • Identify and report equipment or facility maintenance needs.

Program Support

  • Assist with organizing and updating HBI PACT curriculum materials, lesson plans, presentations, and participant activities.
  • Organize construction supplies and recommend materials needed for future training cycles.
  • Support the Construction Trainer with general program preparation and special projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or HiSET preferred.
  • Interest or experience in construction, building maintenance, carpentry, or related trades.
  • Ability to safely use basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Valid Massachusetts driver's license preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in construction, facilities maintenance, or vocational training.
  • Familiarity with construction shop safety practices.
  • OSHA 10 certification or willingness to obtain.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Work is performed primarily in a construction training classroom and shop environment. The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and lifting materials weighing up to 25 pounds. The employee will regularly use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn when required.
