This is a full-time, 40 hour per week, year-round position, reporting to the Vice President of Education & Visitor Services.

Position Summary:

The STEM Education Coordinator will oversee the daily operation of the Smithsonian Spark!Lab, as well as provide additional facilitated STEM learning opportunities for visitors in galleries throughout the Springfield Science Museum and on the Quadrangle Green.

Responsibilities Include:

The Coordinator will maintain the day-to-day operations of the Smithsonian Spark!Lab. This includes the preparation of materials for daily activities, maintaining cleanliness and presentation of the space, and setting up and closing the drop-in area. The Coordinator will also serve as a facilitator, keeping accurate counts of visitation, greeting and orienting visitors – to Spark!Lab and to the Museums – and facilitating the hands-on, open-ended activities.

The Coordinator will also manage the behind-the-scenes operations of Spark!Lab. This includes the research and design of new activities following the Smithsonian Spark!Lab guidelines, as well as planning and implementing the regular rotation of activities. An inventory of available supplies and materials must be kept up to date. The Coordinator will report monthly visitation statistics to the Director of Education.

The Coordinator will supervise one part-time staff educator. They will interview, onboard, train and supervise a rotating corps of volunteers and interns. They will coordinate partnerships with schools and other organizations to help bring more volunteers and interns to assist with the daily tasks of Spark!Lab.

As the person in charge of Spark!Lab, the Coordinator will serve as an active member of the Spark!Lab National Network. They will write quarterly reports on what’s happening in Spark!Lab and meet regularly with the Spark!Lab Network Manager for updates. They will also take part in Network trainings, and cohort meetings, as well as attend any Spark!Lab conferences as possible. They will also support Spark!Lab Network initiatives when possible.

The Coordinator will provide in-exhibit education and facilitation within the galleries of the Springfield Science Museum and on the Quadrangle Green. They will assist in the upkeep of hands-on exhibit areas, keeping them ready for visitor use. They will engage and assist visitors in exhibit areas through answering questions, or leading hands-on science activities in a variety of content areas. The Coordinator will also continue to provide other opportunities for educational experiences in the Science Museum by creating STEM/STEAM activities, training other facilitators in these drop-in activities, and maintaining a schedule of drop-in activities and facilitators in the museum as staffing permits.

The Coordinator will actively participate in the museum-wide goals of supporting early literacy and STEM learning. They will share resources and training opportunities with educators and volunteers, and implement changes to support early literacy, universal design for learning, and child development best practices.

The Coordinator also provides additional educational programming as needed. Most importantly, they design and facilitate school programming, leading a field trip experience in Spark!Lab. They will also contribute activities to evening programs and provide additional STEM activity support on family program days, as needed. The Coordinator will also work with the Science Museum staff to support and complement the educational goals in exhibits.

Qualifications include, but are not necessarily limited to:

A bachelor’s degree and experience in the fields of STEM education, early education, or museum education required. Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred. Occasional weekend hours, standing for long periods of time, and lifting 20 pounds are required.
