Hampshire College, a leader in progressive liberal arts education, is seeking a skilled and creative Media Arts Technical Coordinator to support students and faculty working across digital and analog media—in Film, Photo, and Video (FPV) as well as Audio. We’re looking for someone with both technical expertise and a passion for teaching and training—someone who can help students and faculty bring their creative visions to life while ensuring the facilities and equipment that make this work possible are maintained, safe, and accessible.
The Media Arts Technical Coordinator plays a central role in supporting faculty teaching and student learning by overseeing specialized facilities—including digital labs, analog darkrooms, editing suites, and screening rooms—and managing and circulating a robust inventory of production equipment. The role combines hands-on instruction, technical support, and operational oversight. It’s an ideal position for someone who thrives at the intersection of technology, creativity, and education, and who values working in a collaborative, experimental, and inclusive environment.
Hampshire College, an independent, innovative liberal arts institution and member of the Five College consortium, is located on a beautiful rural campus in Amherst, Massachusetts. We provide residential undergraduate education to approximately 800 students.
DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain and oversee media production and teaching facilities in areas of film, photo, video, animation, and game design (digital labs, darkrooms, editing bays, screening rooms, sound recording areas) to ensure cleanliness, safety, and operational readiness.
- Manage media equipment inventory, check-out systems, and equipment repairs/maintenance in collaboration with Library Access Services.
- Assist faculty and students with technical support for projects and courses.
- Hire, train, and supervise student workers in equipment and lab support roles.
- Collaborate with faculty on aligning technical resources with curricular goals.
- Provide instruction and workshops in analog and digital cameras, lighting, audio, editing, post-production, and darkroom processes.
- Develop instructional materials, safety documentation, and best practices guides.
- Participate in budget planning and manage expense and student employment budgets.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Proficiency with digital and analog media production tools, including Adobe Creative Cloud, film cameras, darkroom printing, and professional video/audio equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to teach or train others in technical tools and workflows.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and troubleshooting skills.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism, with experience applying these values in staffing, programming, and services.
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a creative, experimental environment.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree required (media, film, photography, audio, or related field preferred).
- Minimum of 3 years of related experience in media production, technical coordination, facility oversight, or related work.
Alternatives to formal education and paid work experience may be considered as equivalent qualifications to include military service/training, volunteering, activism, and other non-traditional programs and experiences related to the position.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working in an academic or arts-focused educational program.
- Familiarity with equipment circulation systems.
