Job Description
Structural Engineer I
About Our Firm
Waldron Engineering & Construction, Inc. is a multi-discipline consulting engineering and construction management firm specializing in the design, construction, commissioning and performance testing of power generation, combined heat and power, renewable energy, and central heating and chilling facilities. As a premier power engineering and construction management firm in the US, Waldron prides itself on being a leader in advancing new and emerging energy production technologies and developing ways to bring them to commercial application.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a Structural Engineer who can make an immediate contribution to the engineering and design of multiple central utility plant projects, while developing the technical and leadership skills necessary to enable longer-term professional advancement within the team. The ideal candidate must possess a strong foundation in structural engineering theory and its application, experience producing design documents as part of a team, the desire to work in a fast-paced, multi-discipline environment, and the willingness to learn and to be challenged professionally. The task at Waldron is not simply to design stable structures, but to ensure the design concepts are fully-coordinated with the overall needs of the facility, which includes assessment of constructability and project phasing, anticipation of the design interfaces with other engineering disciplines, reviewing plant operability as well as equipment maintenance and rigging access, addressing Code compliance, and ensuring cost-effectiveness of design solutions.
The successful candidate will perform technical work including, but not limited to, the following:
-
Serve as technical resource on design issues and the application of engineering theories, concepts, principles, and processes to evaluate the structural integrity and seismic strength of structures.
-
Analyze existing structures to determine viability of proposed building alterations that typically include replacement, removal, addition and/or modification of equipment and systems within the building. Conceptualize pathways to achieve Code compliance and meet project goals.
-
Research, plan, and design structural solutions that often require novel concepts and approaches within a multi-discipline team to meet project expectations (technical, operational, aesthetic, construction) for industrial facilities, often with client requirements that exceed typical code minimums.
-
Design dynamic foundations for heavy industrial machinery, including combustion turbines, steam turbines, reciprocating engines and compressors, centrifugal chillers, cooling towers, and other balance-of-plant equipment.
-
Develop design concepts through detailed design stage.
-
Design tasks involving load determination, stress analysis, structural steel design using computational software design tools and hand calculations as appropriate.
-
Development of structural design drawings and specifications.
-
Work in a team environment with civil, mechanical, electrical and controls engineering disciplines.
-
Review shop drawings and facilitate the construction administration process.
-
Conduct on-site inspections and troubleshooting investigations, as required.
