Position Summary

The Engineering Mechanic Overnight will be under general supervision, assists in the maintenance, repair, refurbishment, renovation, remodelling, and general upkeep to keep the facility functional and attractive to prospective customers. A substantial amount of time will be spent painting.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct walk-through and visually assess the safe and efficient maintenance and operation of the physical structure(s) of the hotel, all mechanical, electrical, H.V.A.C. systems, and any other related equipment.
  • Paint designated areas and complete plumbing repairs (i.e., clogged drains, copper pipe, change washers, change handles, drain fittings, etc.).
  • Refurbish furniture and fixtures and repair all types of wall coverings.
  • Complete all routine maintenance on public spaces, meeting rooms, ballrooms, outlets, back of the house spaces and grounds. Complete assignments of all repairs, replacement, and renovations projects to offices and employee work areas. Ensure the upkeep of guest areas to maintain an attractive hotel.
  • Perform general maintenance and repairs for assigned areas of expertise such as the interior and exterior of buildings, hotel rooms and contents, laundry and kitchen/refrigeration equipment, lighting, heating, air conditioning (HVAC), ventilation, water treatment systems, and swimming pool, etc.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on a regular basis and ensure that assigned equipment is maintained and operational.
  • Report all unsafe conditions or malfunctioning equipment to the supervisor.
  • Replenish supplies and inventory in a timely and efficient manner and minimize waste.
  • Take required readings on equipment.
  • Replace light switches, receptacles, light bulbs, and fixtures.
  • Protect employer’s privacy and data; keep passwords safe.

Other

Regular attendance in conformance with the standards, which may be established by the hotel from time to time, is essential to the successful performance of this position. Team Members with irregular attendance will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

Due to the cyclical nature of the hospitality industry, employees may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the business needs of the hotel. Mandatory participation in MOD program.

Upon employment, all Team Members are required to fully comply with hotel rules and regulations for safe and efficient operation of hotel facilities. Team Members who violate hotel rules and regulations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.

Supportive Functions

In addition to the performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the General Manager based upon the requirements of the hotel.

Specific Job Knowledge, Skill, and Ability

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities and can explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Above average skills with painting.
  • Some knowledge in electrical systems, components and devices, refrigeration and HVAC systems, boilers, mechanical systems, plumbing, heating and the maintenance and repair of all.
  • Some knowledge of public construction and building systems all related permits, licensing, new and existing codes pertaining to public building and fire safety.
  • Skilled in the proper and safe use of all tools, equipment, materials, chemicals, and products relating to the department.
  • Possess knowledge of OSHA laws pertaining to chemicals and hazardous substances, workplace safety, and the ability to train subordinates to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Able to read, write, speak, hear, and understand the English language to communicate with management, vendors, guests, and staff: being persuasive, clear and to the point. Written communication skills to be concise, well organized, complete, clear, and understandable to formulate complex reports and communicate with the public, staff, corporate offices, and general manager.
  • Able to remain informed on state-of-the-art developments affecting the safe, and effective operation of the building facility.
  • Able to remain calm in emergency situations and to effectively work with the internal and external guests, some of whom require patience, tact, and diplomacy to defuse anger and provide positive and proactive solutions.
  • Able to work on a ladder up to 25 ft. high for extended periods of time.
  • Able to work in enclosed or confined spaces, often in odd positions, that may be loud and wet.
  • Able to move throughout the premise and visually inspect conditions requiring bending, stooping, and reaching arms overhead.
  • Exposure to extreme temperatures outside of the building.
  • Able to use finger/hand movements for extended periods of time. Possess finger and hand dexterity to operate switches, writing instruments, a computer keyboard, etc.
  • Able to grasp and lift to 75 lbs., waist high. Ability to push or pull up to 200 lbs.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Specialized knowledge and skills or certification within a field or discipline such as plumbing, electrician, carpentry, equipment mechanics, HVAC, refrigeration, etc.
  • Trade school and/or college coursework in related fields preferred.

Experience:

  • Experience in a hotel or a related field is preferred.

Licenses or certificates:

  • Any licenses or permits that may be required by law or company regulations, such as an Electrician's license.

Other:

  • Additional language ability preferred.
  • Experience with opening new hotels or extensive renovation projects.
  • Understand basic blueprints
  • Certifications a plus.
  • Ability to effectively deal with internal and external customers, some of whom will require high levels of patience, tact, and diplomacy to defuse anger and collect accurate information and resolve conflicts.
