Job Title: Codman Academy Girls Varsity Basketball Assistant Coach

Location: Codman Academy

Contract Length: November 27, 2023 - February 2024

Reports to: Head Coach / Athletic Director

Job Summary:

The Codman Academy Girls Varsity Basketball Assistant Coach plays a crucial role in supporting the basketball program through training, coaching, and facilitating competitions. The assistant coach is expected to adhere to the rules and regulations set forth by the MCSAO/MIAA, as well as those established by the Codman Academy District Board and athletic administration. The primary objective is to enhance the student-athletes' skills while promoting teamwork, discipline, and good sportsmanship.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of experience coaching basketball at the high school level.
  • Effective coaching knowledge, techniques, and skills.
  • Understanding of the rules, regulations, strategies, and techniques of basketball.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school administrators, governing organizations (MCSAO), opponents, staff, parents, and students.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Supervision & Instruction: Assist in supervising athletic activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship.
  • Instructional Techniques: Utilize various instructional methods and media to meet the needs of student-athletes and enhance their basketball abilities.
  • Program Development: Coordinate the development and promotion of the basketball program, ensuring high standards and participation.
  • Practice Organization: Develop and implement a regular practice schedule to provide opportunities for both individual and team development.
  • Preseason Communication: Hold a preseason meeting with all interested student-athletes and communicate with parents prior to tryouts.
  • Discipline & Conduct: Apply and enforce student discipline during practices, contests, and while traveling off school property, encouraging behavior that aligns with Codman’s Habits of Scholarship.
  • Safety & Protection: Take necessary precautions to protect student-athletes, equipment, and facilities, including measures to prevent hazing and bullying.
  • Equipment Management: Maintain and secure all basketball equipment and uniforms, ensuring they are in good condition.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Maintain records to ensure compliance with all relevant MCSAO/MIAA regulations, and ensure that all regulations are followed.
  • Special Activities Participation: Participate in special events such as senior night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies to foster team spirit and community involvement.
  • Injury Protocols: Follow established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury, ensuring proper care and reporting.
  • Professional Representation: Represent Codman Academy and the basketball program in a professional manner, both on and off the court.
  • Non-Discriminatory Practices: Maintain non-discriminatory practices in all activities and interactions.
  • Professional Development: Attend coaching development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to enhance coaching performance, as determined by the Wellness Director.
