About General Fluidics
General Fluidics is a clinical diagnostics startup developing the Axess™ platform, a breakthrough point-of-care system that delivers laboratory-grade performance across clinical chemistry, hematology, and immunoassays from a single blood sample. By integrating three “gold standard” analytical technologies into one compact instrument, we are transforming how clinicians access and act on diagnostic data. Learn more at generalfluidics.com.
The Role
We are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to join our R&D team and help expand our menu of diagnostic assays for veterinary and human health applications. This is an R&D-focused laboratory role—ideal for a scientist who thrives on experimental design, assay development, and hands-on instrumentation work. You will design and interpret experiments where answers are unknown, not simply execute QC protocols.
Reporting to the Head of Assay Development, you will work closely with engineers and scientists to optimize assay and instrument performance, generate data for analytical validation, and accelerate our path to regulatory clearance and product launch. This role is best suited for a self-starter who can work independently under mentorship, with the drive to solve problems in a fast-paced, startup environment.
Key Responsibilities
-
Design, develop, and validate clinical chemistry, hematology, and immunoassays on the Axess™ point-of-care instrument.
-
Independently plan and execute experiments to optimize assay and instrument performance, collaborating closely with engineers on system integration.
-
Perform data analysis and statistical evaluation to guide assay development and regulatory submissions.
-
Author experimental protocols, R&D reports, and supporting documentation.
-
Support quality assurance through calibration, control protocols, and proficiency testing.
-
Work safely with human and animal blood specimens in compliance with biosafety regulations.
Qualifications
-
Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in biotechnology, biomedical engineering, chemistry, physics, or related field.
-
0–2 years post-PhD or 2–5 years of industry/academic R&D experience (not QC/manufacturing).
-
Experience designing and interpreting experiments, analyzing data, and troubleshooting unexpected results.
-
Hands-on laboratory skills: pipetting, assay development, reagent preparation, use of biosafety cabinets.
-
Familiarity with clinical instrumentation (e.g., flow cytometry, hematology analyzers, clinical chemistry, immunoassays) strongly preferred.
-
Exposure to diagnostic assay development, validation, or instrumentation is a plus.
-
Comfortable in a dynamic startup environment: flexible schedule, ownership mentality, willingness to push projects forward outside a strict 9–5.
-
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to clearly present scientific concepts and data.
Who You Are
-
Curious, creative, and excited to tackle open-ended scientific questions.
-
Thrives on independence but values mentorship and collaboration.
-
Driven by the opportunity to help build a transformative diagnostic platform from the ground up.
