About the Role
The Primary Care Service at our facility serves approximately 30,000 patients across nine practices in the Greater Boston region. We are recognized for our patient-centered approach and operate a tertiary care hospital with academic partnerships, including affiliations with prestigious medical schools.
The Deputy Director role consists of roughly 60% administrative responsibilities and 40% clinical duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead initiatives aimed at performance improvement
- Oversee the recruitment and hiring processes for primary care providers
- Contribute to the ongoing education of healthcare providers
- Manage a pool of float providers
- Supervise the peer review process within the service line
- Assume the duties of the Service Chief in their absence
- Engage with patient advocates to resolve quality of care concerns
- Represent the Primary Care service in various committees and workgroups
- Maintain a partial patient panel in Primary Care
- Facilitate educational opportunities for medical students and Internal Medicine residents
Candidate Profile

Options include academic practices with resident continuity clinics or general primary care clinics.
Clinical Practice Details
Our Primary Care Physicians manage a diverse panel of patients within collaborative teams, providing care to adult men and women. We utilize a national electronic medical record system and are committed to delivering high-quality, evidence-based care in a culture of continuous improvement. Each full-time physician typically manages a panel of around 1,250 patients, with appointment durations of 60 minutes for new patients and 30 minutes for follow-up visits. Both telephone and video consultations are supported. Physicians work within a Patient Aligned Care Team, which includes a provider, a registered nurse, a clinical associate, and a scheduler. Larger practices also integrate behavioral health providers, clinical pharmacists, dieticians, and social workers.
There are no on-call, weekend, or holiday responsibilities associated with this position.
Teaching and Academic Opportunities
Our organization offers teaching roles for medical students and Internal Medicine residents in both inpatient and outpatient settings. An academic appointment may be available, aligned with achievements at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level at affiliated medical schools.
Qualifications
- A minimum of three years of experience in clinical leadership and ambulatory clinic management is preferred
- Experience with population management, evidence-based guidelines, and adult learning principles is essential
- U.S. Citizenship and a full, unrestricted medical license are required
- Board certification in Internal Medicine or Family Practice is mandatory
