Job Description
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Mold Maker to build, maintain, and repair precision molds used in the production of plastic or composite components. This role demands a high level of craftsmanship and expertise in mold design, manual and CNC machining, and toolmaking best practices. The Mold Maker will support both prototype and production tooling, working closely with engineering, production, and quality teams to meet performance, safety, and durability standards.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Manufacture new molds from engineering drawings or CAD models using manual/CNC machining, EDM, grinding, and polishing.
-
Assemble and fit mold components with precision, including cores, cavities, inserts, lifters, and cooling/ejection systems.
-
Interpret complex technical drawings, GD&T, and 3D CAD models (e.g., SolidWorks).
-
Create or modify CNC programs using CAD/CAM software (e.g., Mastercam, PowerMILL).
-
Perform disassembly, cleaning, inspection, and rebuilding of molds for maintenance and post-production servicing.
-
Diagnose and repair mold defects such as flashing, galling, or component misalignment.
-
Validate mold functionality through fit checks or by supporting mold trials.
-
Apply knowledge of thermoplastic and thermoset molding materials and processes to optimize tooling performance.
-
Maintain accurate records of mold builds, modifications, and repairs.
-
Recommend design or functional improvements to enhance cycle time, part quality, and tool longevity.
-
Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
-
Provide guidance and mentorship to apprentices or junior mold makers.
-
Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives such as 5S, Lean Manufacturing, and Kaizen.
Qualifications & Skills:
-
7-10+ years of mold making experience in a manufacturing environment; experience in plastics or composites preferred.
-
Completion of a mold making apprenticeship or equivalent vocational/trade education.
-
Proficient in manual and CNC machining, wire and sinker EDM, and surface grinding.
-
Strong knowledge of injection, compression, and transfer mold construction; blow molding experience is a plus.
-
Skilled in the use of precision measuring instruments (micrometers, indicators, height gauges) and interpreting CMM data.
-
Understanding of mold materials including steels, aluminum alloys, coatings, and heat treatment processes.
-
Ability to troubleshoot common molding issues (flash, sticking, short shots, venting).
-
Familiarity with hot runner systems, cooling circuits, and different ejection mechanisms.
-
Strong attention to detail, documentation, and organization.
-
Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs., standing for extended periods, and operating machinery safely.
-
Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate in a team-driven environment.
