Lawrence Family Development Charter School is currently looking for a professional, skilled School Nurse to provide professional health services and coordinate the resources of the school, home, and community as they pertain to the total health of students. The School Nurse will recommend health policies and curriculum to administrators and assist in supporting students' overall health.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess and evaluate students' health and the degree of significance of health problems on students' educational progress.
  • Recommend policies or practices to improve student health.
  • Respond to any encountered health and social problems such as: child abuse and neglect, alcohol and other drug use, nutrition problems and eating disorders.
  • Organize, carry out, and report on mandated health screening programs and make appropriate referrals and follow-up on vision, hearing, and scoliosis screening failures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and ability to administer medications appropriately, in keeping with school policy on the administration of medication in school.
  • Maintain an updated, accurate health record for each student.
  • Document first aid and illness care provided to staff and students; complete accident reports and maintain a health room activity log.
  • Screen all new students to ensure compliance with immunization laws, and make recommendations for exclusion of students due to lack of compliance to school administration.
  • Recommend exclusion and monitor readmission to school for students with infectious or communicable diseases.
  • Maintain First Aid supplies and equipment in appropriate locations.
  • Utilize effective techniques to counsel students, parents, and school personnel and plan action for eliminating, minimizing, or accepting health problems.
  • Provide programs for the prevention and control of disease for students, staff, and parents.
  • Be a resource to students, parents, Heads of School, and teachers in matters pertaining to health.
  • Assess family history and home situations, which may affect a student's health via personal contact including home visits when necessary.
  • Complete home evaluations for Special Education evaluations; participate in team evaluations and conferences on all children with medical problems.
  • Coordinate health services with community health programs as appropriate.
  • Collaborate/cooperate with community providers and state agencies to meet the health and social service needs of students
  • Completes and submits all MA DPH required surveys and reports.
  • Train school staff as needed in CPR, Health and Safety Issues (ie Blood-Borne Pathogens)
  • Participate in K1 Right from the Start program and/or others as needed.


EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as School Nurse or in related work
  • Valid Massachusetts R.N. license
  • Current CPR, AED and First Aid Certification
  • MA DESE Licensure or eligible for MA DESE Initial Licensure
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred


Schedule: Full-Time, School-Year Position

Reports to: Head of School, Nursing Supervisor
