Job Description Position Summary

The Forklift Operator is responsible for operating powered industrial trucks to load, unload, and move materials within the warehouse in compliance with company safety policies and food handling regulations. This position ensures that products are handled, stored, and shipped in a manner that maintains quality, safety, and inventory accuracy in a temperature-controlled, food-grade environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other material handling equipment to move, locate, stack, and count products.
  • Load and unload trailers, containers, and pallets according to schedules and safety standards.
  • Follow all Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and food safety handling procedures.
  • Inspect forklifts and equipment daily, reporting any defects or maintenance needs.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and report discrepancies to supervisors.
  • Ensure products are stored in designated areas, rotated using FIFO (First-In, First-Out) method, and kept within proper temperature ranges.
  • Safely handle fragile or perishable products to prevent damage or contamination.
  • Assist in warehouse organization, including cleaning and sanitizing work areas per food safety guidelines.
  • Comply with OSHA, FDA, USDA, and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with warehouse staff, drivers, and supervisors to meet operational goals.
  • Participate in safety meetings and training sessions as required.
  • Travel to other facilities if necessary.
  • Assist with other duties as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum 6 months of forklift operation experience in a warehouse setting (food industry experience preferred).
  • Knowledge of safe forklift operation, load limits, and warehouse safety practices.
  • Familiarity with food safety regulations, including GMPs and HACCP principles.
  • Ability to read and interpret shipping documents, safety rules, and warehouse procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 lbs. regularly.
  • Ability to sit, stand, and operate a forklift for extended periods.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, climbing (including ladders), and walking in refrigerated or freezer environments.
  • Ability to work in varying temperatures, including cold storage areas.

Work Environment

Work performed in a warehouse environment with exposure to cold, noise, moving machinery, and forklifts. May require use of personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, jackets, and safety glasses. Regular interaction with other warehouse staff, drivers, and supervisors.
