Job Description:
The Security Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of physical security, loss prevention, regulatory compliance, and emergency preparedness for a licensed Massachusetts cannabis dispensary. This role ensures the safety of employees, customers, assets, cash, cannabis inventory, and company property while maintaining compliance with Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission (CCC) regulations and local security requirements.
The Security Manager serves as the primary security leader for the facility, managing security personnel, surveillance systems, access controls, incident investigations, and security-related training programs.
Due to the nature of the cannabis industry and Massachusetts regulatory requirements, the Security Manager must maintain on-call availability outside of normal business hours to respond to security incidents and ensure timely completion of mandatory Cannabis Control Commission reporting requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
Security Operations
- Maintain comprehensive security policies, procedures, and protocols
- Oversee daily security operations for retail, storage, receiving, and cash-handling areas
- Monitor compliance with Massachusetts CCC security requirements and company standards
- Conduct routine security inspections and vulnerability assessments
- Coordinate opening and closing security procedures
- Ensure proper management of keys, badges, credentials, and access control systems
Surveillance & Monitoring
- Manage and maintain video surveillance systems in accordance with CCC regulations
- Ensure cameras, recording equipment, and alarm systems are functioning properly at all times
- Review surveillance footage related to incidents, investigations, and compliance audits
- Coordinate repairs and upgrades with security vendors and technology providers
- Maintain required video retention records and documentation
Loss Prevention & Asset Protection
- Investigate theft, diversion, inventory discrepancies, fraud, and security breaches
- Partner with Inventory and Compliance teams to identify risks and implement corrective actions
- Develop strategies to minimize shrinkage and operational losses
- Monitor cash handling processes and transportation procedures
- Conduct internal investigations and prepare written reports
Regulatory Compliance
- Maintain thorough knowledge of Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission regulations
- Ensure security operations remain compliant with state and local licensing requirements
- Prepare security documentation for inspections, audits, and license renewals
- Support compliance reviews and corrective action plans when necessary
- Serve as a liaison during regulatory inspections involving security matters
- Ensure all required security-related incidents are reported to the CCC within mandated reporting timeframes
Emergency Response & Risk Management
- Maintain emergency response plans for robbery, theft, fire, medical emergencies, severe weather, and active threat situations
- Lead incident response efforts and coordinate with law enforcement, emergency services, and regulatory agencies
- Conduct emergency drills and preparedness exercises
- Prepare incident reports and recommend preventive measures
Security Team Leadership
- Train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate security personnel
- Provide ongoing coaching and professional development
- Ensure security staff maintain professionalism and exceptional customer service standards
- Manage staffing levels to provide appropriate security coverage
- Conduct performance evaluations and disciplinary actions when necessary
Training & Awareness
- Deliver security awareness training to dispensary employees
- Educate staff on robbery prevention, workplace violence prevention, emergency procedures, and loss prevention practices
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and regulatory compliance throughout the organization
Qualifications:
Required
- Must be 21+ and eligible to obtain required state cannabis agent registration
- High school diploma or GED
- Minimum of 3–5 years of security management, law enforcement, military, loss prevention, or related experience
- Experience supervising security personnel and managing security programs
- Strong knowledge of CCTV, access control systems, alarms, and security technologies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to conduct investigations and prepare detailed reports
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and security management software
Preferred and Prioritized Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, Business Administration, or related field
- Military veteran with leadership, law enforcement, force protection, intelligence, or security-related experience strongly preferred
- Prior cannabis industry security management experience
- Experience in regulated industries such as cannabis, pharmaceuticals, banking, gaming, healthcare, or retail
- Massachusetts security, law enforcement, military, or related certifications
- Strong background in investigations, loss prevention, physical security, and regulatory compliance
- Demonstrated success leading security teams, managing security programs, and coordinating emergency response activities
- Experience working with cannabis regulatory compliance programs
- CPR, First Aid, and emergency response certifications
Skills & Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of physical security principles and best practices

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
- Ability to monitor surveillance systems for prolonged periods
- Ability to respond quickly to emergencies and security incidents
- Ability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs require

- Timely and accurate completion of all mandatory CCC incident reporting requirements
