The Town of Falmouth seeks a dependable and safety-conscious individual to join the Highway Division of our Department of Public Works as a full-time Mechanical Equipment Operator I (MEO-I). This position helps maintain safe, accessible, and reliable roadways, drainage infrastructure, and other public facilities throughout the community.
This is a full-time, year-round, benefit-eligible position that works 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Overtime opportunities are available for weather-related operations, emergency response, and other operational needs, and overtime worked between midnight and 7:00 a.m. is paid at double time. In addition, the Town provides opportunities to obtain additional licenses and participate in professional development that supports career advancement within the DPW.
Under general supervision, the MEO-I performs skilled manual work involving public works construction and maintenance and the operation of trucks, specialized equipment, power tools, and other machinery. Key responsibilities include:
· Operating trucks and equipment for roadway, drainage, construction, maintenance, and snow and ice control operations;
· Hauling, loading, and unloading materials and performing routine inspection, servicing, and maintenance of assigned vehicles and equipment;
· Constructing, repairing, and patching streets and sidewalks and installing, repairing, and cleaning drainage components, guardrails, fencing, and signs;
· Laying pipe, repairing and maintaining stormwater infrastructure, digging and shoveling, trimming brush, collecting roadside refuse, and operating hand and power tools; and
· Responding to service problems, weather events, and public works emergencies and assisting other crews and Town departments as assigned.
When not operating vehicles or specialized equipment, the MEO-I performs manual labor and other Highway Division maintenance duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of one (1) year of experience in public works construction and maintenance activities, including the operation of trucks or other public works equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
The successful candidate should have knowledge of public works equipment, materials, construction and maintenance methods, and applicable safety precautions. Candidates must be able to operate hand and power tools, work effectively as part of a team, and perform physically demanding work, including lifting and/or moving up to 100 pounds, under varying conditions.
A Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-B) with authorization to operate air-brake-equipped vehicles is required for this position. The Town will consider strong candidates who do not currently possess a CDL-B. The selected candidate will receive training and support to obtain the required license through the Town’s in-house CDL training program and must obtain the required license within the first six (6) months of employment. The successful candidate must also obtain OSHA-10 certification within the first six (6) months of employment and pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screening.
Expected Starting Hourly Rate: Step 1 ($26.51/hour) to Step 3 ($28.67/hour), commensurate with qualifications and experience, with eligibility for annual advancement up to Step 9.
