Join Illinois Tool Works (ITW) as a direct-hire team member in Newburyport, MA (01950). As the Vacuum Metallization Operator, you’ll keep a high-precision web coating line running smoothly—setting up, threading, and tuning the process that gives specialty films their reflective finish.

A day in the role

You arrive ready to execute the production plan. You review the schedule to time your changeovers, prep the metallizer, and use the control panel to bring the system online. You align rollers and boats, feed film through the path, and dial in wire feed and line speed. Throughout the run, you watch the web closely for defects, adjust parameters as needed, and document results. Between jobs, you clean down the machine—sometimes including confined-space entry—then reload, rewind, and move finished rolls by cart or forklift. You record run data, print labels, and complete quality checks using defined procedures and testing equipment—making pass/fail calls and looping in technical staff when anything is borderline.

What you’ll handle

• Plan and execute machine changeovers per schedule
• Start/stop and control the metallizer via HMI/control panel
• Align/secure rollers and boats with hand tools
• Thread film; set wire feed, web speed, and process parameters
• Monitor film quality; correct deviations in real time
• Complete setups to apply metallized designs and rewind finished product
• Measure and test against specifications; follow QA procedures and use testing instruments
• Perform frequent cleanouts between runs; occasional confined-space entry (machine-dependent)
• Handle materials; load/unload, pack, and transport using carts/pallets; operate a forklift/fork truck
• Use computers to print run sheets/labels and log production per SOPs and job orders
• Work safely with solvents following hazardous materials protocols
• Cross-train across teams; learn product codes, color numbering, and jumbo tagging

Schedule and pay

• Primary posted schedule: 1st shift, 7:00 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
• Hourly rate: $21–$23
• Facility also operates a 2nd shift: Monday–Friday, 2:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.; overtime may include 1–2 weekends per month (Sat/Sun). Flexibility to support coverage is important.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Manufacturing experience and/or strong mechanical aptitude preferred
• Intermediate computer skills; accurate documentation
• Attention to detail; clear verbal and written communication
• Willingness to learn and support other ITW ShineMark, North America departments as assigned
• Familiarity with 5S is a plus
• Comfort working in a fast-paced, dynamic production environment

Physical and safety requirements

• Frequent standing and walking to inspect product; climb ladders and stairs
• Reach with hands/arms; hear machinery, forklifts, and coworker cues; communicate effectively
• Complete a respiratory clearance exam and wear a respirator when required
• Lift/push/pull/move up to 85 lbs as needed
• 100% non-smoking campus—compliance with this policy is required
