About This Role
The Garland School is seeking a Classroom Aide with an interest in nature and play-centered education who will work with children ages 2-3 years starting in August 2026. The Classroom Aide will support inclusion within the group environment of our nature-based program. In this vital role, you will work with all the children in the class, including those with an Individualized Educational Plan, to foster their development, ensure their safety, and promote a positive experience of being in childcare. The Classroom Aide will collaborate closely with the Lead and Assistant Teachers as part of a teaching team, to implement strategies that address developmental and behavioral needs and enable children to access the Garland School curriculum fully. This role is perfect for a passionate individual eager to make a lasting impact while developing their skills in early childhood education.
This is a great opportunity for someone seeking an introduction to nature-based, Waldorf-inspired work with young children, and/or working with children outdoors in all weather. Set among 200 acres of forest and streams, our school emphasizes year-round immersion in nature including trail walking, woods exploration, gardening, and seasonal festivals. Staff at Garland are welcomed into a community that prioritizes care and mutual aid. This is a grant-funded, one-year position with the possibility of extension or being hired permanently after the grant term ends.
What You'll Do
Responsibilities
- Support the weekly rhythm of activities that encourage imaginative play and creative expression
- Support daily circle time with fingerplays, songs, and movement games
- Help to incorporate meaningful work (gardening, handwork, cleaning, cooking) into the rhythm of the day, in support of the Waldorf values of mirroring the home environment
- Serve home-cooked meals prepared by the school’s meal program.
- Keep the classroom clean and tidy and care for materials and toys
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- 1 year of experience working with children, including ages 3 and under
- 3 college credits in human development or education, Fundamentals for Early Childhood Professionals, Vermont Afterschool Essentials Certificate (*or commitment to complete one of these within 12 months of employment*)
- Team player; enthusiastic about working with other adults and taking care of children and the school environment.
- Excellent communication skills for collaborating with staff, parents, and specialists
Nice To Haves
- Waldorf-related training or experience or interest in learning
- Experience sharing the outdoors with children or interest in learning
- Familiarity with the Pyramid Model, Early MTSS, Seed & Sew, Nurtured Heart, or other positive behavior support model
