Position Title: Substitute Group Exercise Instructor
Position Type: On‑Call / As Needed
Overview
We are seeking an energetic, reliable, and adaptable Substitute Group Exercise Instructor to join our health club’s fitness team. This role provides on-call support to cover scheduled and last‑minute instructor absences, ensuring our members continue to enjoy high‑quality group exercise experiences. Ideal candidates are passionate about fitness, skilled at engaging diverse groups of participants, and confident teaching one or more class formats.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead engaging, safe, and effective group fitness classes in accordance with club standards and industry best practices.
- Deliver classes with short notice, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
- Provide modifications and progressions to accommodate participants of all fitness levels and abilities.
- Create a welcoming, motivating environment that supports member retention and satisfaction.
- Set up, inspect, and properly store equipment before and after classes.
- Communicate promptly with the Group Fitness Manager regarding availability, substitutions, and scheduling needs.
- Uphold cleanliness, organization, and safety within the studio and throughout the facility.
- Represent the health club positively, modeling professionalism, reliability, and exceptional customer service.
Qualifications
- Current group fitness certification required (e.g., AFAA, ACE, NASM, ACSM, or equivalent).
- Specialty certifications, depending on class format (e.g., Les Mills, Zumba, Spinning, Yoga Alliance, Barre, Pilates), strongly preferred.
- Proven experience leading group exercise classes in a health club or studio environment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to adapt quickly, manage varying class sizes, and deliver an engaging workout with minimal preparation time.
- Reliable, punctual, and comfortable working in an on-call capacity.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to demonstrate movements safely and effectively.
- Ability to lift, move, or carry equipment up to 25–50 lbs as needed.
- Comfortable standing, teaching, and leading physical activity for extended periods.
Work Environment
- Fast-paced fitness club environment with varying noise levels.
- Interaction with members of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels.
- Flexible, on-call scheduling based on club needs.
