The Department of Neurosurgery at our organization is on the lookout for an exceptional Neurosurgeon to enhance our spine-focused practice at MelroseWakefield Hospital, located in Melrose, MA. The successful candidate will become part of a dynamic team consisting of 9 neurosurgeons, 10 physician assistants, 6 nurse practitioners, 11 neurosurgical residents, and a dedicated support staff.

Our neurosurgery team aims to provide hope and healing for individuals facing nervous system disorders through the creation and execution of personalized neurosurgical treatment plans that prioritize patient comfort and well-being.
Your Role in Enhancing Patient Care
- Become an integral part of a comprehensive neurosurgical department that offers the highest standard of care.
- Engage in a favorable call schedule shared among the department at both our organization and MelroseWakefield Hospital, allowing you to maintain your neurosurgical expertise.
- Utilize cutting-edge cranial and spinal surgical techniques, with access to advanced cranial and spinal navigation systems, as well as robotics at our facility. MelroseWakefield Hospital is currently assessing the budget for spinal navigation and robotics.

Practice Overview
The neurosurgery program at MelroseWakefield Hospital is a comprehensive initiative that assesses and treats patients with cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve disorders. The administration is highly supportive and committed to the advancement of neurosurgery. The new team member will focus on further developing an already expanding spine-centered practice at MelroseWakefield Hospital, dedicating 80-90% of their time to providing inpatient, outpatient, and surgical care to the local community. Most procedures performed at this facility are elective spinal surgeries, with the option to refer cranial and more complex spine cases to our main center.
Currently, there are no neurosurgical residents at the MelroseWakefield site, although various other residency programs, including general surgery, rotate through this hospital. Two dedicated neurosurgical physician assistants provide inpatient, outpatient, and surgical support. The inpatient service includes care for intensive care and floor patients, as well as emergency room and off-service consultations, including a Level 3 trauma center. The selected candidate will also participate in the shared call pool at our academic Level 1 trauma center, fostering interdepartmental relationships and maintaining cranial skills.
MelroseWakefield is equipped with specialized neurosurgical scrub techs, circulating nurses, C-arms, Jackson Tables, Wilson Frames, Mayfields, and Leica Surgical Microscopes. Plans for spinal navigation and robotics are currently in the budgeting phase. Involvement in academic activities such as teaching medical students/residents, attending academic conferences, and engaging in research can be supported, though these are not mandatory for this role. The anticipated case volume in the first year is approximately 125 cases, with the potential to exceed 250 once established.
Qualifications for the Ideal Candidate
- Board certification or eligibility in Neurological Surgery (ABNS).
- A collaborative spirit, eager to work with a diverse range of stakeholders to promote exceptional patient satisfaction.
- A strong clinical focus on elective spine and general neurosurgery; a spine fellowship is advantageous but not required.
- A desire or experience in supporting a community-based practice.
- The willingness to engage in teaching and academic clinical promotion if desired, though not required.
- A current medical license in Massachusetts or the ability to obtain one from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine is essential.
