Position: Outpatient Coder
Location: Las Vegas, NV 89102
Job Type: Full-Time
Salary: $24.15 – $37.43 per hour

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and abstract medical record documentation to determine accurate and complete outpatient and professional service codes.
  • Assign CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes in accordance with current coding guidelines and reimbursement regulations.
  • Capture the physician's or clinician's work, skill, and medical decision-making (MDM).
  • Research coding questions and identify opportunities for improved coding accuracy and reimbursement.
  • Monitor coding trends, identify discrepancies, and escalate issues to management.
  • Review coding edits, denials, and documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Run and respond to coding queries when additional clarification is required.
  • Use 3M 360 or similar computer-assisted coding and encoder systems.
  • Maintain established departmental quality and productivity standards.
  • Prepare technical reports and assist with data collection, analysis, and retrieval.
  • Protect confidential patient and organizational information in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Maintain knowledge of revenue cycle workflows, including charges, charge master processes, code edits, auditing, denials management, and documentation improvement.
  • Communicate effectively with providers, staff, and other personnel regarding coding and documentation issues.


Required Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of documented outpatient professional coding experience, such as:
    • Physician office
    • Multidisciplinary medical practice
    • Orthopedics
    • Primary care
    • Interventional radiology
    • Emergency department
    • Hospitalist services
    • Ambulatory surgery center


Required Certification

Candidates must hold one or more of the following certifications or credentials:

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
  • Certified Outpatient Coder (COC)
  • Certified Coding Specialist – Physician-based (CCS-P)
  • Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

The successful candidate should have knowledge of:

  • Outpatient coding and reimbursement regulations
  • CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM/PCS code sets
  • Medicare hospital and physician outpatient coding requirements
  • Current healthcare technology and Electronic Health Record (EHR) practices
  • Medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, and minor surgical procedures
  • Coding guidelines and applicable laws, rules, regulations, and departmental policies
  • Revenue cycle workflows, including charge capture, coding edits, auditing, denials management, and documentation improvement


Strong skills in the following are required:

  • Medical record review and abstraction
  • Coding accuracy and quality assurance
  • Meeting established productivity standards
  • Identifying and reporting inconsistencies and discrepancies
  • Using encoder and computer-assisted coding systems, including 3M 360 or similar systems
  • Running coding queries
  • Reviewing denials
  • Data collection, manipulation, and retrieval
  • Preparing technical reports
  • Maintaining confidentiality of patient and organizational information
  • Using computers and standard office software
  • Effective verbal and written communication
  • Attention to detail and accuracy
  • Maintaining concentration for extended periods while working with distractions
  • Establishing effective working relationships with providers, staff, and other personnel
