Position Overview
Reporting to the Manager of Sterile Processing Quality and Education, this role is responsible for creating and sustaining training initiatives for all Sterile Processing Department (SPD) and Endoscopy personnel. The individual will deliver training sessions, assess the progress and skill levels of participants regularly, track outcomes, manage competency documentation, and maintain certification records for all staff members. This position also involves the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of orientation programs, progression pathways, in-service training, workshops, and ongoing education for SPD and Endoscopy teams. A variety of clinical, consultative, and educational tasks will be performed within the Perioperative, Sterile Processing, and Endoscopy domains.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement engaging, scenario-based training programs focused on sterile processing and endoscopy tasks.
- Conduct an annual assessment to identify staff competency needs and evaluate the skills of the sterile processing and endoscopy teams.
- Employ diverse training methods, techniques, and tools to maximize the effectiveness of educational programs.
- Monitor and communicate the effectiveness of training initiatives.
- Document training results and address any issues that arise.
- Evaluate the abilities, skills, and learning outcomes of trainees.
- Update online coursework and competencies in accordance with departmental changes and new regulations.
- Provide tailored orientation and education for all staff involved in instrument care, SPD, and Endoscopy, in collaboration with the Perioperative Education team.
- Offer educational support to perioperative departments, including updates on instrument processing, point-of-use care, instrument tray maintenance, and instrument functionality.
- Oversee the orientation process for new hires in the sterile processing departments.
- Maintain an educational calendar that includes all mandatory and site/vendor-specific training sessions.
Minimum Qualifications Certification/Registration Requirements:
- Current certification from a recognized body such as the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).
- Preferred certifications include Certified Endoscopy Reprocessor (CER), Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS), and Certified Healthcare Leadership (CHL).
Educational Background:
- Required: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree.
Work Experience:
- A minimum of five years of experience in SPD, including at least two years in a supervisory or managerial role and a minimum of three years as an SPD Technician.
