The Town of Falmouth seeks a motivated and reliable individual to join the Facilities Maintenance Division of our Department of Public Works as a full-time Custodian. This position plays an important role in keeping Town buildings clean, safe, well-maintained, and accessible to employees and members of the public.
The position works 40 hours per week, Sunday through Thursday, from 2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with a half-hour unpaid dinner break. Overtime opportunities are available as needed for coverage or emergency response.
Under the direction of the Facilities Manager and the Facilities Working Foreman, the Custodian performs custodial and general maintenance work in Town buildings. Key responsibilities include:
· Cleaning and maintaining offices, restrooms, locker rooms, holding cells, furniture, floors, carpets, and other interior surfaces;
· Collecting refuse and recycling and maintaining building entrances, walkways, stairs, and exterior grounds, including snow and ice removal;
· Performing minor building, furniture, and equipment repairs; basic carpentry; painting and sanding; and replacement of lights;
· Operating custodial equipment, boilers, and heating and cooling systems and monitoring facilities for maintenance or safety concerns;
· Moving and setting up furniture, loading and unloading deliveries, transporting materials, and operating Town vehicles; and
· Opening and closing buildings, providing building security, responding to alarms, and assisting at other Town facilities as assigned.
This position requires the ability to work independently and cooperatively, manage multiple tasks efficiently, and respond to facility needs promptly and professionally. The work may involve frequent contact with Town employees and members of the public.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of three (3) years of experience in custodial and maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
Candidates must have knowledge of custodial methods, materials, and equipment and working knowledge of basic carpentry. Experience operating buffers, scrubbers, snow blowers, hand tools, and power tools is required. The successful candidate must also be able to perform basic equipment repairs.
The work requires moderate physical effort, including frequent lifting and moving of furniture and equipment, shoveling snow, chipping ice, reaching overhead, bending, kneeling, climbing ladders, lifting up to 80 pounds, and pushing and pulling cleaning equipment. The position includes occasional outdoor work in adverse weather conditions and exposure to heat, cold, and odors.
A valid Massachusetts Class D motor vehicle operator’s license is required. The successful candidate must pass a Massachusetts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) background check and obtain Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) unescorted-access clearance following fingerprinting.
Expected Starting Hourly Rate: Step 1 ($26.32/hour) to Step 3 ($28.46/hour), commensurate with qualifications and experience, with eligibility for annual advancement up to Step 7.
