Job Purpose
This position is responsible for overseeing all daily operations of the machine shop, including programming, scheduling, production flow, personnel management, and continuous improvement efforts. This role requires advanced expertise in CNC machining and Mastercam programming, along with strong leadership skills to ensure efficient workflow, on-time delivery, and high-quality output.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
Leadership & Oversight
- Manage and supervise all machine shop personnel, including machinists, programmers, and operators
- Provide technical guidance and support to team members during setup, machining, and troubleshooting
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations and company policies
- Maintain a clean and safe environment (5S)
- Conduct training and development of staff to improve skills and productivity
Mastercam Programming & Technical Expertise
- Lead all Mastercam programming activities for CNC equipment
- Develop, optimize, and maintain CNC programs for efficiency, quality, and cycle time reduction
- Ensure proper tooling selection, feeds, speeds, and machining strategies
- Review drawings, specifications, and CAD files to ensure accurate program development
- Troubleshoot complex machining and programming issues
- Attend engineering and design meetings for best machining practices
Production Scheduling & Planning
- Create and manage daily and weekly production schedules to meet customer delivery requirements
- Coordinate workflow between programming, setup, machining, and inspection
- Prioritize jobs based on deadlines, material availability, and shop capacity
- Monitor progress and adjust schedules in real-time to maintain efficiency
Production Flow & Process Improvement
- Identify bottlenecks and implement solutions to improve throughput
- Optimize setup processes, machine utilization, and labor efficiency
- Implement lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement initiatives
- Ensure proper allocation of machines, tooling, and manpower
Equipment & Maintenance
- Oversee machine maintenance schedules and ensure proper operation of all equipment
- Monitor coolant, oil levels, and machine condition
- Coordinate repairs and preventative maintenance activities
- Assist in purchasing required tooling and equipment to best optimize performance
Other Responsibilities
- Collaborate with engineering, purchasing, and management teams
- Monitor KPIs such as on-time delivery, scrap rates, and efficiency
- Assist with quoting and estimating machining time when required
Physical and Mental Requirements
Physical Demands
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment
- Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Standing, walking, and machine interaction required
Work Environment
- Industrial machine shop setting
- Exposure to noise, moving mechanical parts, and metalworking fluids
- Required use of PPE

Additional Information
Qualifications
- 7–15 years of experience in CNC machining, setup, programming, and shop operations
- Minimum 3–5 years in a leadership or supervisory role
- Advanced proficiency in Mastercam programming (required)
- Strong knowledge of machining processes, tooling, and materials
- Proven experience in production scheduling and workflow management
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and CAD models
