Job Description Intellectual Property Associate – Patent Prosecution & Litigation
Direct Counsel represents an AmLaw 100 firm seeking a highly motivated Intellectual Property Associate with 3–5 years of post-JD experience to join its sophisticated IP practice. This position may be based in Boston, Denver, New York, Palo Alto, or Washington, DC.
The attorney will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge patent prosecution and litigation matters involving innovative technologies and life sciences, while collaborating with experienced attorneys on complex intellectual property matters.
Responsibilities
- Handle patent prosecution and litigation matters from strategy through resolution.
- Advise clients on patent portfolio management, development, and patentability.
- Conduct competitive landscape and intellectual property analyses.
- Work with clients in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, gene therapy, medical device, and digital health industries.
- Collaborate with attorneys and clients on sophisticated IP strategies and disputes.
Qualifications
- 3–5 years of post-JD experience with substantial experience in both patent prosecution and litigation.
- J.D. from an accredited law school.
- Undergraduate degree in Biology; a life sciences Ph.D. is strongly preferred.
- Experience handling patents in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, gene therapy, medical devices, or digital health.
- Knowledge of patent portfolio management, patentability, and competitive landscape analysis.
- Admission to practice before the USPTO.
- Active state bar admission and membership in good standing in the jurisdiction where the attorney will be based (MA, NY, CA, CO, or DC).
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and strategic-thinking abilities.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team.
