A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer
As a Principal Engineer, you will lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure in a wide range of contexts from roadway reconstructions and streetscapes in highly urban settings to signature trail projects in suburban and rural areas that highlight and enhance the natural environment. You use programs like AutoCAD in order to fulfill production work on your projects as needed and/or supervise others doing that production work. You will manage projects and guide your team through design development, design review, bid package development, permitting, and answering questions during construction. You will work with your team to ensure that our projects are consistently of the highest quality.
 
You’ll be at the table with clients and colleagues from a variety of disciplines, delivering projects to construction. You will play a key role in implementing the firm’s quality initiatives and in supporting business development and project pursuits. In an industry that is constantly changing, you’ll be at the forefront of delivering creative solutions to challenging projects.
 
We are targeting a salary range of $175,000-$200,000 for this position. 
 
Work Schedule for a Principal Engineer
This full-time position typically works a hybrid schedule of 40 hours a week, with at least two to three days a week in the office. We also provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home up to two days per week. Our Boston office is conveniently located in Boston’s Downtown Crossing, directly adjacent to the iconic Boston Common, within a short walk to all of the major rapid transit lines and close to both North Station and South Station commuter rail lines. Applicants should be willing to travel within New England to support public engagement activities. The office is easily accessed on foot, by bicycle, and via transit (Downtown Crossing, Park Station, South Station, SL4, SL5, and several buses including routes 43,7, 11).

Qualifications of a Principal Civil Engineer:

Summary: 
The MWRA Engineering &amp; Construction Department has an opening for interns to assist Engineering staff with performance of engineering duties. These duties include engineering calculations, field investigations, data review and analysis, water and wastewater system evaluations, and documentation of lessons learned during an on-going construction project for use in future design/construction projects.
 
Posting Period: 12/31/2025 to 1/14/2026
Location: Chelsea, MA
Salary: $19 - $22 per hour
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:00pm
 
Key Responsibilities
<ul>
<li>Review engineering reports and plans.</li>
<li>Compile data and perform data reviews and interpretations.</li>
<li>Assist in the evaluation of water and wastewater system performance.</li>
<li>Perform and verify engineering calculations. </li>
<li>Assist with document control services. </li>
<li>Perform related duties as assigned. </li>
<li>Assist with review of construction-related design changes, development of lessons learned, and improvement of construction contract specifications.</li>
</ul>
 
Required Qualifications
<ul>
<li>A minimum of two years of college in an accredited degree program in civil, construction management or environmental engineering. Coursework in environmental engineering, water and wastewater systems and/or hydraulics is preferred.</li>
<li>Familiarity with computers, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, AutoCAD, GIS</li>
<li>Internship duration: January - June 2026</li>
