Represent the organization in meetings with stakeholder and constituent groups. Leadership and Supervision (10%):
Serve as a resource for attorneys at pro bono law firms working on LCR cases. Provide leadership and supervision for fellows, interns, and administrative staff. Background: The Second Step provides free, trauma-informed services for survivors of domestic violence throughout Greater Boston and beyond. We are dedicated to ending the cycle of abuse with our wraparound support, including safety planning, legal services, counseling, housing stabilization, support groups, and community education.
 
Job Title: Staff Attorney
 
Essential Employee:The person in this role is considered an essential employee and may be required to work on-site during a government declared state of emergency or weather emergency.
 
Hours: Full-time, 8:30am-5pm Monday-Friday. Occasional evening and weekend work when necessary. This position is in-person and some flexibility is required to attend to urgencies and emergencies occasionally. After 90 days, candidate is eligible for hybrid work consistent with agency policy.
 
Reports to: Director of Legal Services
 
Primary Objectives: The Staff Attorney is primarily responsible for providing direct legal services to survivors of intimate partner domestic violence. This includes interviewing clients and relevant witnesses, preparing and working up cases, and representing clients in court. The Staff Attorney is also responsible for assisting the Director of the Legal Services Program with administrative, legislative, and systemic efforts to address issues that impact survivors of intimate partner domestic violence, in outreach to and relationship building with various individuals and organizations, including: the legal community, courthouse staff, law enforcement agencies, medical providers, child welfare agencies, and schools.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

<li>Accept client referrals from both community and internal sources;</li>
<li>Provide limited assistance representation and full representation to clients as appropriate, including but not limited to family law cases and abuse prevention order hearings in Probate &amp; Family as well as District Courts;</li>
<li>Provide legal advice, brief consultation, and/or preparation of legal pleadings on behalf of clients as well as targeted referrals to outside legal providers as appropriate;</li>
<li>Engage in frequent courtroom litigation and advocacy;</li>
<li>Provide information regarding criminal proceedings and processes to survivors of domestic violence;</li>
<li>Ensure compliance with all Board of Bar Overseers (BBO) ethics standards, including confidentiality and ethical conflicts of interest;</li>
<li>Collect and record all relevant program data daily using TSSs case management system, including billable hours;</li>
<li>Organize and/or present periodic legal trainings to TSS staff, volunteers, and/or outside agencies on various relevant legal topics;</li>
<li>Prepare and/or present specialized community-wide trainings to both legal and non-legal professionals on domestic violence issues;</li>
<li>Attend legal trainings to maintain up to date knowledge on domestic violence legal issues;</li>
<li>Advance STJs profile in the greater legal community by establishing and maintaining relationships with other legal practitioners, community agencies and governmental agencies;</li>
<li>Participate in legal community collaborations such as policy groups, steering committees, focus groups and/or bar associations geared towards domestic violence law;</li>
<li>Participate in legislative, administrative and other systemic advocacy designed to promote the interests of domestic violence survivors;</li>
<li>Flexibility for very occasional evening work when necessary; and</li>
<li>Attends All Staff meeting and trainings;</li>
<li>Represents TSS at community engagement and development events as needed</li>

Qualifications: 
<ul>
<li>JD and admission in good standing to the Massachusetts Bar;</li>
</ul>

<li>Demonstrated experience providing legal services to low-income or otherwise vulnerable clients;</li>
<li>Experience with clients affected by domestic violence, crime, trauma, and/or mental health issues;</li>

<li>Candidates must have an enthusiasm for and desire to engage in regular, frequent courtroom litigation and negotiations with opposing parties;</li>
<li>Candidates with 3 to 8 years of litigation experience are preferred, including experience with Abuse Prevention Order/Harassment Prevention Order proceedings and Family/Probate Law Matters; experience working as a 3:03 certified attorney is relevant;</li>
<li>Candidates must possess strong oral and written communication skills, with the capability of handling complex matters that coincide with assisting survivors of domestic violence;</li>
<li>Candidates must demonstrate an ability to handle case work efficiently and effectively; demonstrated aptitude for productivity and the ability to meet monthly billable hours minimums is required;</li>
<li>Ability to manage multiple projects and cases simultaneously and with flexibility, and to prioritize competing deadlines;</li>

The Senior Attorney will build on this highly successful work to maintain a constant stream of litigation in one or more of our impact areas. The Senior Attorney’s areas of focus will be determined based on relevant experience and interest, as well as organizational need.
The Senior Attorney will actively develop litigation and will also support strategic policy advocacy, community outreach, and communication efforts to ensure the organization’s visibility across diverse communities and social justice movements. 
The Senior Attorney will report to LCR’s Litigation Director or Deputy Litigation Director.
This position is full-time (40 hours/week) and will require flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed. We currently employ a hybrid work environment, with Senior coming into our office in downtown Boston at least once a week for Senior meetings on Mondays. The Senior Attorney should have the ability to travel statewide, and to a lesser degree nationwide, as needed for court proceedings and other events.
SUMMARY OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (% of time spent)
Case Development and Litigation (80%)
Develop and maintain a significant caseload of civil rights matters in federal and state court. Actively engage in litigation through the following activities:

The Senior Attorney will ensure the development of a consistent pipeline of new cases that will be co-counseled with pro bono law firms. 
The Senior Attorney will also ensure the measurable quarterly growth of the litigation docket, and participate in weekly supervision meetings to assess work and quarterly productivity meetings to assess the volume of cases. Tracking work and “billable” hours is required for quarterly reports. 
While developing and litigating cases, the Senior Attorney will ensure that all internal and external work is aligned with the organization’s brand, policies, procedures, and protocols.
Policy Advocacy, Community Outreach, and Organizational Visibility (10%)
Participate in community outreach, policy advocacy, legislative advocacy, and community meetings that are strategically aligned with the development of impact litigation and policy reform in targeted areas. Leverage policy advocacy and community outreach to ensure that our organization remains highly visible across diverse communities and social justice movements.
Represent the organization in meetings with stakeholder and constituent groups. Participate in traditional media appearances (newspaper, TV, radio); social media activities; and other communication efforts, including drafting community education materials, press releases, and newsletters. Support fundraising efforts.
Leadership and Supervision (10%):
Serve as a resource for attorneys at pro bono law firms working on LCR cases. Provide leadership and supervision for fellows, interns, and administrative staff. Actively develop expertise in substantive areas of civil rights law and legal practice. Participate in the development of long-term strategic goals and objectives for the organization.

Your ability to develop and maintain a substantial litigation caseload in state and federal court, typically in collaboration with pro bono law firms, will ensure continued success and growth in this role. 3. SUCCESSFULLY ENGAGING IN POLICY ADVOCACY AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH TO ADVANCE LCR’S MISSION AND ENHANCE LCR’S VISIBILITY:
Your role in advancing our mission through policy advocacy and community outreach is critical. Success in this area will be evaluated based on your ability to align policy and community outreach with our complex litigation and policy reform work, as well as your capacity to build and expand strategic relationships that further our mission.

COMPENSATION
