The Opportunity
HLA's Summer Law Clerk Program aims to contribute to the development of law students into public interest attorneys who serve people facing barriers to care and coverage. Our Access to Care &amp; Coverage Practice (ACC) is seeking two law clerks for a 10-week internship (full-time - 40 hours per week) during the Summer of 2026.
HLA is currently operating in a hybrid model with staff working both on-site and remotely. Arrangements for the Summer Law Clerks are flexible. HLA has run highly successful remote and hybrid Law Clerk programs since 2020.
About Access to Care &amp; Coverage
HLA's Access to Care and Coverage Practice (ACC) specializes in challenging errors in health insurance enrollment, fighting denials of coverage for health care services, and protecting patients from illegal medical billing and collection practices. We serve people with coverage under Medicaid (MassHealth) and private health insurance. Our ACC team devotes particular attention to the health care problems faced by immigrants, trans and gender diverse people, and patients with long-term care needs. A top priority for all of HLA is pursuing racial and ethnic equity in health care.
Responsibilities
<ul>
<li>Availability to work full-time for a 10-week period during the summer of 2024. Internship dates are May 18, 2026 - July 24, 2026.</li>
<li>Assist attorneys in the representation of individual clients with duties including legal research, analyzing health insurance and medical billing records, advocating with health insurers and health care providers, drafting letters and other communications to parties, and connecting with clients and key collaterals by phone and email.</li>
<li>Participate in advocacy to reform public policies through legal research, writing, and attending meetings with state leaders and advocacy partners.</li>

Administrative Support:

<li>Provides administrative and logistical support to the General Counsel and the Legal Department including but not limited to receiving and screening calls, arranging conference calls, receiving visitors, coordinating and scheduling meetings, preparing agendas and confidential correspondence, reserves and prepares conference rooms and handles other special projects as assigned. </li>
<li>Provides administrative support to the General Counsel and Legal Department related to the MCCA’s Designer Selection Board including but not limited to meetings, scheduling vendor and contractor interviews, initiates posting to MCCA website and prepares invoices for MCCA Designer Selection Panel members’ services, preparing and assisting with all procurement correspondence including but not limited to contract award letters, notice to proceed letters, rejection letters. etc.</li>
<li>Provides IT assistance when requested on formatting, editing, and typing documents. </li>
<li>Obtain, track and file MCCA and Show Event insurance certificates.</li>
<li>Reads and routes incoming mail. Locates and attaches appropriate files to correspondence to be answered by Legal. </li>
<li>Tracks all public records requests and works with MCCA attorneys to ensure compliance with the Massachusetts Public Records Law deadlines. </li>
<li>Processes all legal invoices through the MCCA’s Business Central finance system</li>
<li>Schedules, coordinates, and prepares for MCCA Board of Directors Meetings, including preparation of confidential correspondence, presentations, reports, agendas, notices, and resolutions.</li>
<li>Assists with all aspects of Board of Directors, and miscellaneous subcommittee meetings and works with MCCA attorneys to ensure compliance with the Open Meeting Law.</li>
<li>Acts as coordinator for executive meetings to ensure all needs are communicated to proper personnel. </li>
<li>Acts as Liaison between the MCCA and the Members of the Board and/or other MCCA Staff.</li>

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

<li>Minimum of 5-10 years of relevant experience supporting high-level executives in a confidential environment; some of this experience may be substituted with post-secondary education or certification (e.g., Bachelor’s degree, paralegal certificate).</li>
<li>Strong organizational skills, discretion, and ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure.</li>

WORK SCHEDULE:

The Opportunity
HLA's Summer Law Clerk Program aims to contribute to the development of law students into public interest attorneys who serve people facing barriers to care and coverage. Our Mental Health Advocacy Program for Kids (MHAP for Kids) is seeking two law clerks for a 10-week internship (full-time - 40 hours per week) during the Summer of 2026.
HLA is currently operating in a hybrid model with staff working both on-site and remotely. Arrangements for the Summer Law Clerks are flexible. HLA has run highly successful remote and hybrid Law Clerk programs since 2020.
About MHAP for Kids
HLA's Mental Health Advocacy Program for Kids (MHAP for Kids) diverts children with unmet mental health needs from the juvenile justice system by helping them access mental health services. MHAP for Kids attorneys are embedded in Family Resource Centers (FRCs) across Massachusetts where they help at-risk youth overcome barriers to mental health services. A Boston University study of MHAP for Kids found that the program improves the health of children and their families.
Responsibilities

<li>Availability to work full-time for a 10-week period during the summer of 2026. Internship dates are May 18, 2026 - July 24, 2026.</li>
<li>Assist attorneys with the representation of individual clients with duties such as conducting legal research, analyzing children's health and educational records, assisting attorneys' advocacy with schools and state agencies, and communicating with clients and key collaterals.</li>
<li>Conduct legal research on issues that pervade MHAP for Kids client matters to strengthen our practice program-wide.</li>
